Licensing and Prerequisites for Indoor Location
This section has the following information regarding the use of the Indoor Location feature.
- Licensing
- Third Party Data Providers: Cisco Spaces, Extreme Networks, Juniper Networks (licensing, hardware, best practices)
- Disabling MAC Randomization
Licensing
The Indoor Location feature requires the following:
- SOTI MobiControl must be installed with an active license.
- Devices must be enrolled in SOTI MobiControl.
- Devices must have SOTI MobiControl Agent installed.
- Location Service must be installed with SOTI XSight (see Installing SOTI XSight).
- For Indoor Map, you must have one of the following:
- Indoor Map configured within the Wi-Fi Provider setup
- Indoor Map available on local computer
- Indoor Map created and saved using Design Studio (see Using Design Studio to Create Indoor Map Images).
- For Data Provider Connection Type–using third party data provider
integration:
- Please see the next section: Third Party Data Providers
- For GPS connection type, special setup is not required.
Third Party Data Providers
Cisco Spaces
- Licensing:
- To implement indoor device tracking using Cisco Spaces, the Spaces ACT license is required. This license provides access to a comprehensive suite of location-based services, including asset tracking, occupancy monitoring, and environmental analytics. Licensing is typically based on the number of devices or the square footage of the area covered.
Note: Deploying a minimum of three Access Points is required for
triangulation. Higher density and strategically placed APs result in better accuracy
and more reliable data for indoor location tracking.
- Wi-Fi Access Points deployed for the indoor environment:
Manufacturer | Access Points |
---|---|
Cisco Access Points | Cisco Catalyst 9100 Series (9115, 9117, 9120, 9130) |
Cisco Aironet 4800 Series | |
Cisco Aironet 3800 Series (3802) | |
Cisco Aironet 2800 Series (2802) | |
Cisco Aironet 3700 Series (3702) | |
Cisco Aironet 3600 Series (3602) | |
Cisco Meraki Access Points | Meraki MR Series (MR36, MR46, MR56, MR28, MR33, MR42, MR52, MR53, MR20, MR70, MR76, MR86, MR74, MR84) |
Note: To connect Meraki Access Points, the same Cisco Spaces ACT
license is required. For detailed instructions on connecting Meraki to Cisco Spaces,
refer to Cisco's guide in the section 'Importing
Cisco Meraki Locations Using the API Keys'.
- Best Practices:
- Minimum AP Requirement: Cisco recommends at least 3 APs within range of a target area to enable triangulation for location accuracy. This is necessary for obtaining more reliable positioning information through RSSI (signal strength).
- Ideal Configuration: Access points should ideally be spaced about 10 meters apart to provide dense coverage, supporting Wi-Fi indoor tracking.
Extreme Networks
- Licensing:
-
- To implement indoor device tracking using Extreme Networks' solutions, the ExtremeCloud IQ Pilot license is required. This license enables the management of access points, switches, and SD-WAN, providing real-time and historical monitoring, comprehensive troubleshooting, and integrated network applications.
- For enhanced location services, such as asset tracking and analytics, the ExtremeCloud IQ CoPilot license is recommended. CoPilot offers advanced anomaly detection and capabilities to ensure the user experience of wireless and wired devices.
Note: Deploying a minimum of three Access Points is required
for triangulation. Higher density and strategically placed APs result in better
accuracy and more reliable data for indoor location tracking.
- Wi-Fi Access Points deployed for the indoor environment:
Manufacturer | Access Points |
---|---|
Extreme Networks | AP410C |
AP460C | |
AP510C | |
AP560H | |
AP230 | |
AP250 | |
AP305C | |
AP310i/e | |
AP410e |
- Best Practices:
-
- Minimum AP Requirement: Extreme Networks also requires at least 3 APs within the vicinity of a tracked area for triangulation. This setup enables the Cloud IQ platform to determine device location with a balance between coverage and precision.
- Ideal Configuration: Extreme recommends APs positioned around 10 meters apart for optimal coverage.
Juniper Networks
- Licensing:
- To implement indoor device tracking with Juniper Mist AI, you can utilize the User Engagement service. The User Engagement service is available on a per-Access Point (AP) basis, allowing you to scale your deployment according to your organization's needs. To activate this subscription, you can contact MistRenewal@juniper.net to purchase the necessary licenses.
Note: Deploying a minimum of three Access Points is required for
triangulation. Higher density and strategically placed APs result in better accuracy
and more reliable data for indoor location tracking.
- Wi-Fi Access Points deployed for the indoor environment:
Manufacturer | Access Points |
---|---|
Juniper Networks (Juniper Mist) | AP 21 |
AP 24 | |
AP 33 | |
AP 34 | |
AP 41 | |
AP 43 | |
AP 45 | |
AP 61 | |
AP 63 | |
BT11 |
- Best Practices:
- Minimum AP Requirement: For Juniper Mist, three or four APs per area are recommended to enable robust triangulation. This number ensures redundancy, allowing the AI-driven Mist platform to compensate for signal interference and layout changes.
- Ideal Configuration: For best results, APs should be spaced about 5 to 10 meters apart, depending on specific location accuracy requirements.
Disabling MAC Randomization
Note: Disabling of MAC address randomization is available for both
Android Classic and Android Enterprise devices.
- Disable MAC address randomization in SOTI MobiControl.Note: See the SOTI MobiControl topics, Wi-Fi (Android Classic) and Wi-Fi (Android Enterprise) for more information on configuring Wi-Fi on your devices when creating or editing a profile.
- Create a Profile in SOTI MobiControl. In the Configurations section under Connectivity, select Wi-Fi. Toggle Disable Mac Randomization on.
- Assign to the Device Group for Indoor Location Positioning.
