OS Update Settings

About this task

Configure software update settings for devices to make sure they stay up to date with the latest operating system versions and security patches. Manage when and how devices receive software updates, including deferring updates.
Note: This configuration only applies to declarative managed devices running iOS 18.0+ or iPadOS 18.0+.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to Main Menu > Profiles and choose Apple.
  2. Select Declarative Profile.
  3. On the Configurations tab choose OS Update Settings under the Security & Restrictions card.
  4. Configure your OS update profile configuration.
    Enable notification Manage device notifications regarding an upcoming OS update.
    Recommended cadence Specify behavior on how the device shows software updates for the user when more than one update is available. Choose from:
    • Not Specified
    • All
    • Oldest
    • Newest
    Enable automatic actions Enable the toggle to configure automatic software update behavior.
    • Download: Configure if the user can control automatic downloads of available updates.
    • Install OS updates: Configure if the user can control automatic installation of available updates.
    • Install security updates: Configure if the user can control automatic installation of available security updates.
    Defer OS update availability by Specify the number of days (90 days max) to defer the OS update on the device. When configured, the software updates only appear after the specified delay.
    Enable Rapid Security Response updates Enables configuration of Rapid Security Response updates, allowing users to install critical security patches as soon as they are available.
    Enable Rapid Security Response rollback Enables users to remove previously installed Rapid Security Response updates and revert to the prior system state.
  5. Select Save and Assign to apply the update policy to your Apple devices.
