Setting the Firmware Password on macOS Devices
About this task
macOS devices allow you to set a firmware password restricting who can start the computer from an internal or external storage device other than the designated startup disk. Use SOTI MobiControl to set the firmware password on a macOS device.
Note: Requires macOS 10.13 or later.
Important: This procedure applies to Intel-based macOS devices
only.
To set the firmware password on a macOS device:
Procedure
- From the hamburger menu, select Devices. The Devices view opens.
- In the left pane, select the device group with the macOS device you want to set the firmware password for. The devices in the selected group appear in the right pane.

In the right pane, do one of the following:
- Select the selection button beside the macOS device. The device action bar appears.
- Select the name of the macOS device. The device information panel opens.
- On the device action bar or the device information panel, select More to open the Device Actions menu.
- On the Device Actions menu, select Set Firmware Password. The Set Firmware Password dialog box opens.

In the Set Firmware Password dialog box, enter:
- The current firmware password (if set on the device)
- The new password
- The new password confirmation
- Optional: To permit execution of option ROMs, select Allow execution of option ROMs.
- Optional: Select Request Requires Network Tether to require the device to be network-tethered to run the command.
- Select Set Firmware Password.
Results
You have set the new firmware password on the macOS device.
