Updating the Operating System of Linux Devices

About this task

You can update the operating system of your Linux devices running Ubuntu if they are running a Long Term Support (LTS) OS version. You can only update devices to the latest available version, even if another version is available.

You cannot rollback the update.

To update the operating system of a Linux device:

Procedure

  1. In the Devices view, select the Linux devices whose operating systems you want to update.
  2. Note: SOTI MobiControl automatically prompts all compatible Linux devices to scan for OS updates every 24 hours. However, you can use the Scan for OS Updates device action to force your devices to run a scan immediately.
On the Device Actions menu bar, click the More menu button and select Scan for OS Updates in the Device Actions menu.
  3. In the Scan for OS Updates dialog box, click the Scan for OS Updates button. If there's a warning message at the bottom of the dialog box, click the message to get more information about why the device can't scan for updates.
Note: If a device is currently offline, it will scan for OS updates the next time it checks in.
  4. Open the Device Information panel for a device and check the Software Updates section to see whether an OS update is available.
This step must be performed on each device individually.
  5. Select all devices with available updates, click the More menu button, then select Update Linux OS in the Device Actions menu to open the Update OS dialog box.
  6. In the Update Linux OS dialog box, click Update Linux OS. If there's a warning message at the bottom of the dialog box, click the message to get more information about why the device can't scan for updates.

Results

Once the update begins, you can monitor its progress in the Device Information panel.
