Assigning a Profile

About this task

Assign a profile to push its configurations and packages down to your devices. You can assign a profile immediately after creating it or assign it later.

Procedure

  1. From the SOTI MobiControl main menu, select Profiles.
  2. Select a profile to open its Profile Information panel. Then, select (Assign) from the profile actions list to open the Assign dialog box (see Assign (Profile)).
The dialog box layout changes depending on the platform the profile pertains to.
Tip: You can also select > Assign next to the profile name to open the Assign dialog box.
  3. Select the devices or device groups on the Devices tab that you want the profile to target.
  4. Optional: Select the Search icon and type the device group's complete or partial name in the text field that appears.
If the search finds matches, the matching groups replace the initially displayed all groups list. You can return to the list of all groups by selecting X in the search field. If the search finds no matches, the corresponding text message appears under the search field.
  5. Switch to the Users tab and select one or more directory services or Identity Provider (IdP) groups to target associated devices for profile assignment.
Note: You can configure devices associated with a directory service or IdP group to either include them or exclude them from profile assignments.
  6. Switch to the Filters tab and define filter criteria to refine your target devices.
The filter criteria use the same logic as the search function in the Devices view. You can create filters using a limited set of device and extended properties. Assignment filters can be saved across profiles and policies. You can also view, manage, modify, or delete saved filters.
Note: To save a filter, you must have Manage Saved Assignment Filter and View Saved Assignment Filter permissions. Before deleting a filter, remove it from all profiles and policies that use it.
  7. Select Options to set installation methods and schedules. Available options depend on the device platform and profile configuration.
    Choose from the following:
Installation Method Choose how to install the profile's content on the device(s):
    • Automatic: Installs the profile contents as soon as the device receives them.
    • Self Serve: The device user chooses which configurations or packages to install.
Installation Priority Select the priority value for a profile to establish its precedence over other profiles during installation. This does not affect the installation of non-prioritized profiles.
Note: Value 1 is the highest and ensures that the profile installs first.
Halt Installation of Lower Priority Profiles This toggle enables administrators to halt the installation of lower priority profiles.
Note: If this profile fails to install, SOTI MobiControl halts the installation of all lower prioritized profiles.
Network Restrictions Specify the networks the device can use to download profile contents.
Minimum Battery Level Set a minimum battery level required to begin installation.
Note: The following section is visible only if the profile has a package.
Store Packages Persistently When enabled, packages remain in the device's persistent storage to be re-deployed after a factory reset or a cold reboot.
Reinstall Every Update Schedule and Check-in When enabled, the device reinstalls packages based on the update schedule and each time it checks in with the server.
Uninstall Contents After Profile Revocation/Deletion When enabled, this option removes package contents from the device(s) when removing or deleting the profile.
Install Date Set a date and time for installing the package on the device. Choose which time standard to use: Device Time or UTC Time.
Custom Package Installation Schedule Set time frames for installing the packages. You can set many time frames. Select Add to add a time. Select Edit to edit an existing one.
Assign Date Enable to select a date and time to assign the profile. If you also enable Delay to next update schedule, profile assignment takes place on the first update check-in following the assign date.
Disable Date Enable to select a date and time to disable the profile.
Revoke Date Enable to select a date and time to revoke the profile.
Custom Deployment Schedule Set time frames for installing the contents of the profile. You can set many time-frames. Select the Add button to add a time-frame.
Note: You can set a profile assign date/time and a time-frame. If the assigned date/time is outside the time-frame, the profile is not automatically installed. It deploys only if the device checks in during the time-frame and after the assign date. The time-frame start does not trigger a check-in.
Note: The download duration of packages may exceed the custom deployment time-frame based on their number and size. Downloads complete even if they exceed this time-frame. If interrupted by a device going offline, the download resumes from where it left off once the device is back online.
Profile Scheduling Assign and revoke profiles from devices based on a reoccurring weekly schedule for the selected days of the week. Based on the set profile schedule, the server requests all assigned devices to check-in at the time of assignment to apply the profile. The server requests all assigned devices to check-in at the time of revocation to remove the profile.
Start Day Specify the day of the week to assign the profile to the selected devices.
Start Time Specify the time of the day to assign the profile to the selected devices.
Note: The time zone corresponds to the server’s local time.
End Day Specify the day of the week to revoke the profile from the selected devices.
End Time Specify the time of the day to revoke the profile from the selected devices.
Note: The time zone corresponds to the server’s local time.
  8. Select Save Options to return to the main Assign dialog box.
Note: The number of devices affected during assignment displays at the bottom of the window.
  9. When finished, select Assign.

Results

Your profile applies to the selected devices based on the assignment criteria.

Troubleshooting: If your profile fails to install across many devices, it may be due to a configuration issue or a missing dependency. Edit the profile and assign it again. Otherwise, use Retry Installation from the Profile Actions list in the Profile Information panel. This forces devices with a Failed or Partially Installed profile to try to reinstall the profile.
Important: For a given profile, you can configure either Profile Deployment Actions or Profile Scheduling but not both.
