iOS Activation Lock

Activation Lock is a component of the iOS Find My iPhone feature. When Activation Lock is enabled on an iOS device, the associated Apple ID and password are required before anyone can:

• Wipe the device
• Reactivate (and use) the device
• Turn off the Find My iPhone feature on the device

MobiControl automatically enables the Activation Lock feature on supervised iOS devices. It does not have control of Activation Lock on unsupervised devices.

Apple enables Activation Lock automatically on unsupervised devices.

If you enable Activation Lock on the device, the user can only disable it by disabling the full Find My iPhone feature. To disable (or enable) Activation Lock, right-click the device, select Advance Settings, select Activation Lock Settings from the pop-out and uncheck Enable Activation Lock.

Activation Lock Bypass

If you need to re-provision a device with Activation Lock enabled (with the end-user's Apple ID), MobiControl has created a workaround - the Activation Lock Bypass code. A code is generated by the device allows administrators of MDMs to bypass the Activation Lock step of the device reactivation process.

Use the Activation Lock Bypass as part of your security system to prevent theft and loss of company data. Check to see if Activation Lock (and Find My iPhone) are enabled in the Information panel of the device.

You can use the Activation Lock Bypass at both the device and group level.

1. Right-click the device or group and navigate down to Actions.
2. From the pop-out menu, select Bypass Activation Lock.
3. Follow the dialog box instructions.

To maintain a high level of security, there are some limitations to the Activation Lock Bypass. If you are transferring a device from another MDM and the phone has not been factory reset, MobiControl cannot retrieve the Activation Lock Bypass code from the device and therefore cannot wipe these devices. Administrators must manually reset those devices in person.
